As Cloudflare expands in Portugal, its new office in Lisbon meets the need for additional space to accommodate more employees while providing optimal working conditions. Despite the flexible working arrangements introduced by the pandemic, physical office spaces remain crucial for the American tech company, as they play a vital role in strengthening corporate culture and fostering team connections.

Located in the Allo building, the office was designed by Openbook and built by Vector Mais. It perfectly balances shared spaces that encourage collaboration with open-plan work areas, focus zones, and collaboration rooms. Materials and colors are significant throughout the interior, featuring tiles, terracotta bricks, wood, and a vibrant palette of coral, yellow, blue, and green tones. These design choices, along with exposed white-painted ceilings, enhance the brightness of the space and capitalize on the unique views of the nearby bridge and the Tagus River.

“Working with Vector Mais was an outstanding experience from start to finish. Their team was professional, knowledgeable, and committed to delivering top-quality results. They completed our project on time, within budget, and exceeded our expectations in every way. The attention to detail and dedication to excellence truly set them apart.”

What was Cloudflare’s briefing, and how was it applied to the project?
Cloudflare had ambitious goals for its new office in Lisbon: to create a space that not only met the needs of a rapidly growing team but also served as a reference point in Europe and globally. This project aimed to align with the standards of its model offices, such as those in San Francisco (where Cloudflare was founded) and Austin, incorporating a set of standard features and characteristics. However, the design was also adapted to Lisbon’s unique context. This global vision was translated into the local setting by using national materials and products, such as handcrafted tiles and Portuguese furniture brands. Portuguese artisans and artists were invited to create exclusive pieces for the space.

Which environments stand out in the office?
The Commons, or cafeteria, stands out for its multifunctional nature. It serves as a break area, a space for interaction among employees, a workspace, and even an auditorium. This environment reflects Cloudflare’s culture and identity in the various ways it is used, further enhanced by graphic elements like the brand’s color variations and a mural created exclusively for Cloudflare. This is set against the stunning backdrop of the Tagus River and its bridge. Another notable space is the Library, which contrasts the rest of the office. The design aims to create an atmosphere of tranquility and focus reminiscent of traditional libraries.
